Good vs Evil

The Shawshank Redemption has many storylines that run throughout the movie that involve multiple people at different moments. One of the biggest storylines is good vs evil.

The bible has countless stories on how you should always try to be a good person with whatever you are doing. There is even the Ten Commandments that tell you ways to be a good person while going through your life. The guidelines are there to help Christians try their best to be good in gods eyes, on the other hand, some believe that if you are not good in gods eyes then you are bad and going to hell. Hell is where the devil resides and is the place that bad people go instead of Heaven.

The good in Shawshank Redemption is Andy Dufresne as he is a good man who was wrongly convicted of murder. Andy was a prison inmate who never committed a crime, meaning it would have been easy for Andy to quickly give up or accept what had happened and just rot out his days in prison. Andy instead chose to battle and make the most of the bad situation creating opportunities for himself as well as others within the prison such as getting more books, getting funding for a new library and even teaching a fellow inmate to get his high school equivalent.

With the good of course comes the evil. The evil in the bible as previously mentioned is the devil and doing harm upon others whether it be physical or otherwise. There is plenty of evil in the movie with the biggest example being, ironically in a giant prison, the warden. Warden Norton had been running the prison for years never thinking about creating a better environment for inmates or even thinking of them as fellow humans. Some specific examples of warden Norton's evil behaviour is how he killed Tommy solely so that Andy would never have a day in court, taking bribes from poor construction company owners, and even gave Andy two months in the hole for putting up a small fight for his life. The filmmakers did a fantastic job of making Warden Norton a genuinely hateable character who is the evil to Andy's good.
